IIT ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT | DR. ANKUR PARIYANI

The IIT Guwahati Alumnus on His Entrepreneurial Journey and Role in Improving Safety in Process Industries

Dr. Ankur Pariyani

It is mid-December and we sat down with our alumnus, Ankur Pariyani, PhD, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Near-Miss Management (NMM) to hear his thoughts on what drove him to start his company and how he views the future of process industries. With 24 industrial plants globally using their product, NMM is pioneering a new era of early risk detection software for industrial operations based on machine-learning. He received his BTech from IIT Guwahati, and MS and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, all in chemical engineering.

PANIIT USA:
First of all, congratulations – we heard that you were recently honored with a ‘35-Under-35’ award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Tell us about your journey after graduating from IIT Guwahati to the present.

Dr. Pariyani: Thank you and I appreciate this opportunity. After graduating from IIT Guwahati in 2006, I joined the Chemical Engineering PhD program at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and started working on the idea of utilizing plant data for identifying precursors of major events. The premise of my PhD work was that before any incident happens, there are several ‘near-misses’ or precursors that occur along the way that are inadvertently missed or overlooked by the operating personnel. If the operating team can get timely information on such developing risks, they can take proactive corrective actions and mitigate most of the incidents and unexpected process failures. “To give you an analogy, think of a heart attack as an accident and increasing cholesterol as its precursor – if you can inform a person well in advance of the increasing cholesterol levels, the chances of him having a heart attack can be greatly reduced.” The key is identifying the early indicators.

With that vision, after graduation from UPenn, I co-founded Near-Miss Management with one of my PhD advisors to continue expanding our initial ideas and demonstrate real-life applications. It took us nearly 3 years to develop our technology and create a commercially viable product. The product was finally launched in late 2014 while our patents were granted last year.
