IIT Roorkee has a legacy that goes back to 1847- a formidable history of more than 155 years. Established as Roorkee college in 1847 it was the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The College was renamed as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. In 1949 the status of erstwhile college was elevated to the First Engineering University of Independent India. The Institute celebrated its 150th anniversary in October 1996.
In 2001, University of Roorkee was declared as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The institute is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities of Europe and Asia exchanging students and senior scholars.
