An IIT Bombay alumnus from Kota climbed Mount Everest, confirmed the website of his employer Tata Steel.
Hemant Gupta, 27, works as a manager in the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) in Jamshedpur of Jharkhand and his family lives in Kota.
Her mother Savita Gupta (47), a clerk at the Government Polytechnic College in Kota, told HT about her son scaling the world’s tallest peak — 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above the sea level.
“Hemant summited the peak around 6.25am on Saturday (May 27), covering a distance of around 30,000 ft; he started his Mount Everest expedition on April 3 from a base camp at Kathmandu in Nepal,” Savita told HT.
“Hemant is among a few IIT alumni in the country to summit Mount Everest,” she said. Mastan Babu Malli, an IIT Kharagpur graduate, had climbed Everest and six other mountain peaks of the world in 2016. Hemant got his BTech degree in metallurgical engineering and material science from IIT Bombay in 2011.
“TSAF authorities informed me about Hemant’s feat, but I am not able to contact him as he is on his way back from Everest,” Savita said.
